Craft Idea – {Cupcake Signs}

May 11, 2011

I thought I’d attempt a craft tutorial of sorts for the first time with something seemingly easy.  I have been working for the last few weeks on decorations for my baby sister’s bridal shower and now that the day has come and gone, I can finally share with you some of my work.

If you’ve never heard of a Silhouette Digital Craft Cutter before, you’re seriously missing out.  It’s very much like a Cricut except it gives you a lot more freedom.  I’ve been able to hook this machine up to my computer, make any design that comes to mind and then cut it on the spot.  I’ve been leeching off of my mother-in-law (the true owner of the Silhouette) but one day I will give it back and get my own.  That day has not come yet!

The theme of my sister’s shower was “How Sweet It Is”.  We tried to run with that theme as much as possible and because I was in charge of decorations, I might have gone a bit overboard.  By far, the cupcake signs were my favorite item.  Well – maybe the cupcakes themselves were my favorite item.  Haha.

photo 2 (2)Supplies needed:

  • any desired color cardstock paper
  • lollipop sticks
  • spray adhesive
  • scotch tape
  • Silhouette digital craft cutter (Cricut or handcut designs will work as well!)

I found these lollipop sticks at Crafts 2000 but I am very certain that you can find them at basically any store that carries craft supplies.  Most likely it will be near your cake decorating items.

I set the designs to be 2.5”x2.5” circles with a scalloped edge.  Really, you could just have plain circles that they would turn out just fine.  You could also do that part by hand if you wanted to.  The inside designs were in a darker color cardstock and were 2”x2” circles.

I had the initials of the bride and groom to-be on one of the designs and the other had the words ‘How Sweet It Is’.  This part (again) could be easily done without a Silhouette.  I would actually recommend making it easy on yourself and making printable 2×2 circles on your computer and then cutting the circles out yourself.  Either way works!

I set up shop on my living room floor but I’m sure there were a million better places it could have been done.  Spray adhesive is not my friend right now…beware that it gets everywhere and your hands will be tacky for DAYS.  I chose to use this kind of adhesive because it was much faster than taking a glue stick to everything.

After they were all glued down, I simply took a piece of scotch tape and fixed the lollipop sticks on the backside of the circles.  The results?  Fifty super cute signs to decorate some cupcakes.

Here are pictures of the cupcakes, as they were set at the shower.  I also made some make-shift cupcake stands for the centerpieces.  I used some plates and a piece of construction paper and they worked out pretty well!  It’s all about thrifty design. 🙂
