…ugh. Superman.

Sep 20, 2013

Dear Fellow Parents, if you want to save yourselves from the insanity that we’ve put ourselves through the past few days you’ll want to read this.  Do NOT buy your son/daughter Superman pajamas if you want to see them wear anything besides that for the next few days.  Don’t do it.  Avoid the children’s clothing aisle in Target if you know what’s good for you.  Especially if your child has a giant imagination and loves superheroes.

Someone forgot to warn us.

I went shopping with Louis on Tuesday to find a dress for a wedding that we are attending on Saturday.  He’s such a good shopping partner and I always love the extra one-on-one time we get with outings like this.  I told Louis I was looking for a dress and he told me he wanted to get something too.  Hey…cooler weather is coming, what would it hurt to buy a couple of long sleeved shirts and pants?

In theory, it was a perfectly fine idea to show him the superhero pajamas that they had lined up.  Who doesn’t need a new pair of jammies?  Much to my surprise, Louis chose Superman (whom we really don’t have much to do with in our house compared to Marvel characters) instead of picking Spiderman or Batman.  So he’s expanding his fandom.  Totally cool with me.

Once in the parking lot, he asked to put on his ‘costume’ so he could wear it home.  It should have been a red flag right there.  Costume should never have been the word I let him use.  But I did.  Dumb, dumb Katy.

We cannot get him to take them off without a fight.  And tears…oh the tears.  You’d think that we were telling him we were sending him away for life and he’s never going to see his friends, dogs or family ever again.  I’ve never seen Louis so attached to something and cry so hard over it.  It’s completely unexplainable.

When we can wrestle them off of him, it takes forever to calm him down.  Bribery with candy doesn’t even work.  We’ve tried it all.  He’s more interested in his Superman “costume” than he is candy.  It’s that serious, folks.  AND – if he’s not wearing them, he’ll constantly be talking about how much he wants to wear them.  It’s INSANE.  And it’s driving us insane.  I’m hoping to just ride this wave of attachment and he’ll get over it.

He’s now worn this god forsaken Superman pajama set:
♦ the remainder of Tuesday and through the night.
♦ ALL day & night Wednesday (minus the 45-minutes we got him to change his pants into jeans.)
♦ As soon as I got home from work at 5:00 and through bedtime on Thursday.

Choose your battles, right?  That’s what we normally do…and this seems like such a silly thing that we should be able to work through.  I don’t care if he wears them at home.  I’m wondering when I should be concerned about the cleanliness of it.  But I don’t want to take my child out in public wearing pajamas.  We might not always be the best dressed people but we are always dressed.  Wearing pajamas or sweat pants while you are out and about is not cool with me.

Sheesh.  It doesn’t help that he’s so cute in them.  Or that he’s extra cute when he runs with one arm out in front of him, telling us that he’s ‘super fast’ and is ‘going to save everybody’.  Part of me wants to burn those pajamas.  And then part of me wants to just take a deep breath and realize that maybe the stress they’ve caused us isn’t worth it at all.

That part that wants me to burn them is still holding on though.  Haha.  Let’s hope that today is an easier transition and we can let go of the red and blue for just one day.  Fingers crossed.
