Feature Friday: Seraya Sunshine

Hey guys!  While I’m in Indiana visiting my sister and her family, I thought I’d introduce you to a sweet gal who makes adorable goodies.  You know how I love my artisan buddies.

K: Where did you come up with the name of your business? 
S: Seraya Sunshine came from my firstborn.  Her name is Seraya.  I started making appliqued onesies when I was pregnant with her as a way to make something just for her.  I ended up enjoying the whole process of creating something with my hands.  I ended up opening a shop 9 months after she was born and since she was my inspiration behind it all, I decided on Seraya Sunshine, because she is truly my ray of sunshine.

K: Which items do you enjoy making the most?
S: My shop consists mainly of hand appliqued items, specifically onesies/shirts.  I have recently started appliqueing tote bags as well.  I have made jewelry in the past with fabric and have also made tutus.  But my passion lies in creating the hand appliqued onesies.

K: What are your greatest struggles with owning your own business?
S: Finding the time to balance everything. I am now the mother of 2 little girls.  Seraya who is 4 and Nya who is 18 months old.  I also work part time nights as a respiratory therapist.  Balancing work, my business, family and my home is the hardest part of owning my own business.  Everything is hand sewn and takes some time so I find myself working late at night when the girls are sleeping.

K: What are your greatest achievements so far?
S: Hands down, my marriage and my girls!

K: How/where did you learn how to sew/craft/create/design?
S:I have always enjoyed crafting from an early age.  I remember making Christmas ornaments and baby decorations with felt when I was in junior high school.  I showed them around and started getting orders.  My aunt would also take them into work and get orders for me that way.  I have always been interested in some type of artistic hobbies.  I have done pottery, oil painting, and I have dabbled in making jewelry.  But working with fabrics seems to be the one thing that I have stuck to.

K: What inspires your designs?
S: Children obviously.  And I always love when I get custom requests from people.  I love listening to someone’s thoughts and requests and then creating something unique for them.

K: What is your favorite part about selling/making handmade items?
S: My favorite part is just the positive feedback that I get from my customers.  And then when I get a returning customer, I feel really good because it is a great feeling to be a part of a child’s special day, whether it is their birthday,first Christmas,first day of school or welcoming their new sibling into the world.

K: Name one thing in your craft room you couldn’t live without.
S: My fabric!

And of course, a small game of THIS or THAT.
COFFEE / TEA: I used to love my sweet tea.  I never cared for coffee.  Then I had my daughter and was still working night shift and started to drink coffee to stay awake.  Then I had my second daughter, and my coffee consumption increased.  I ended up buying myself a mini Keurig and now I am a full blown coffee drinker.  I love my coffee!
GOLD / SILVER: I love silver!
BIG CITY / SMALL TOWN: I used to live in the city, always had.  I never thought I would ever live in the country…and then I met my husband.  We live on 3.5 acres and although we have neighbors, you can’t see them.  We are still close enough to town that I wouldn’t consider myself completely in the country but I do know that I can never go back to living next door to someone.  I love the quiet and so do my girls.  They love getting outside and being as loud as they want and I don’t have to worry about them bothering anyone!
BOOK / MOVIE: I prefer books over movies but have not had the time for neither since my girls have been born.  One day, I will hopefully get back to reading regularly!
DVD / BIG SCREEN: I would rather be in the comforts of my own home!
JEWELRY / GADGETS: I love my wedding ring.  I occasionally wear other jewelry but not a lot.  The only gadget I really can’t live without is my camera….and my iPhone!
