Four weeks. That’s it. Four weeks to the date of Maeby being diagnosed with cancer, we were forced to say goodbye. It happened so quickly that I feel like we haven’t even had the chance to take it all in.
I’m trying to make peace with everything. It’s hard.
I feel like we did all that we could to keep her comfortable but her lymph nodes were being completely taken over by her cancer and there wasn’t anything we could do to stop them. Steroid pills and shots only helped for a little bit but she lost her appetite, her energy dropped so low, her legs were swelling beyond belief and that sparkle in her eye was missing.
Our house feels emptier. I think George is already confused and saddened by his missing partner. Bennett and I can’t stop the tears from flowing. It’s just so sad.
And so unfair.
I must say, having Louis continues to be a break in the madness. He’s too young to understand what happened, he just knows that we took Maeby to the doctor and she’s not coming home. It’s very matter of fact to him. I’m sure it’ll one day set in that she’s no longer with us but I’m happy to have him be the comic relief in our household at the moment.
Case in point: Bennett told Louis that he needs to be strong for his Momma. So Louis turned to me and flexed his muscles.
Goodbye, my sweet girl. You truly were my best friend.
