Easter + DC | Part Three

Apr 28, 2014

A week after the actual event, I’m finally capable of sharing the White House Easter Egg Roll pictures.  Have I complained about being busy yet?  Yes?  Oh…well then take some notes from my previous posts.  Because we’ve been BUSY traveling and scheming and I feel like I’m doing everything on delay right now.

Our first two DC trip posts are [HERE] and [HERE], in case you wanted to see them.

The very last thing we did in DC was attend the White House Easter Egg Roll.  It was AMAZINGGGGGG.  Overwhelming and a little chaotic and full of people, but if we can do it again next year I totally will jump on it.  Before being let in those gates to the White House lawn, we had no idea what to expect.  We were told that 30,000 people filter through this event within the entire day and even though it was packed, it wasn’t out of control with the crowds of people.

They had just about every single character from Louis’ favorite TV shows and movies there to take pictures with.  The lines behind each character were crazy long so we only got to sneak into photos with these four: Belt (The Croods), SuperWhy, Dora the Explorer and Daniel Tiger.  But Louis got to see the others while walking around, so it seemed just as good to him.  Lou was stoked about meeting his favorites, especially Daniel Tiger.  His smile filled his entire face when he was cheesing next to those characters.

The egg rolling itself was interesting, as I had no idea what it was all about.  Apparently it’s been a tradition forever to do this but I had never heard of rolling an egg with a wooden spoon in a race being an Easter thing before.  Hey…we can now say we’ve done it.

Well, sort of.  Louis didn’t really understand what he was doing and he had just woken up from a snooze in his stroller, so he was disoriented and a little cranky and I ended up carrying him across the lawn to the end, where he could roll the egg a smaller distance.

We’ve never been so close to the White House before and it was really neat to have it in the background of all of our happenings that day.  Too bad we couldn’t clear the crowd every time we wanted to take a picture, so we didn’t have all of those random people in the background.  (It makes you wonder how many backgrounds of how many people’s photos you are in at things like this.)

The egg roll wasn’t the only thing happening.  In fact, there was so much going on that we didn’t even cover all of it.  The First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative was in full force with yoga demonstrations and lessons for the kids, healthy snacks and healthy cooking demonstrations.  There were two stages with entertainment going the entire time.  I wish I could tell you who the performer was but I’m kind of out of the whole pop culture scene and didn’t know the music.

There was also a little spot where a celebrity/someone-of-status would read a book to the children.  Jim Carrey was there earlier in the day and I think President Obama read a story in one of the time slots.  We didn’t stop for this but our slot had former NFL player and NASA astronaut Leland Melvin.

There was also an egg hunt, which Louis and Annie participated in.  Somehow, both kiddos found special eggs and were given special prizes because of it.  We couldn’t have planned it that way!  Louis found a special red wooden egg and he got to keep that and was given a poster print that was special for this year’s roll.

He was so excited about it that most of the way home, Louis kept telling us, “I’m a winner.  I’m the biggest winner ever.”  Haha…yes you are, kiddo.

We are really lucky to have Mary in our lives.  For so many reasons, this day included.  She gladly took care of all of the arrangements for getting the tickets for this and really made it such a fun time for the whole crew.  Thanks Mary!  We really appreciated everything!!

We got to sneak a peek at the White House garden, in all of it’s pristine glory.  Our raised beds have never looked this good…it’s like they have special people to tend to this or something.  It was neat to see and I had no idea how big the lawn of the White House really was.  It’s giant!

Of course I loved that they had craft booths set up for the kiddos to make things.  Well, and adults too.  Because I made some for myself.  They were simple projects that allowed the kids to feel like they’d accomplished something easily and could they play with them instantly.  I’m actually banking the two in the back of my mind for any parties or school related things we might have for Louis coming up.

We were absolutely exhausted and managed to sneak out before the big rush from the crowd.  We went, we saw, we did, we conquered.  Easter 2014 was a blast.

The last pit stop before heading back to Wheeling was in David’s office to collect our things.  Check out these three future leaders at Papa’s desk.  Politics is strong in the McKinley blood line, I don’t doubt that one of the grandkids will somehow be involved in a leadership role in their adult years.

The last picture is my favorite.  I wonder how many Congressmen have sat in this very hallway of the House of Representative offices and cried from exhaustion.  At least one Congressman’s grandson has.  🙂
