Do you subscribe to a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program in your town? Last year was the first time Wheeling had something like this and Bennett and I jumped on it as fast as we could. So glad we did because we are now in our second season of it and I hope they continue this every year.
For fifteen weeks we go and pick up our local food baskets from Black Swan Organics, which are filled to the brim with delicious, locally grown, organic foods. The first few weeks are all very leafy and green but it gets better as the time goes on. This week our haul included: blueberries, cabbage, leeks, cucumbers, tomatoes, various herbs, green beans, lettuce and kale. Most likely I left something out…there was so much goodness inside that one box of ours!
It feels good to support Black Swan, Friendly City Foods, Grow Ohio Valley, our weekend farmer’s market vendors and all of the farming efforts that are happening in our surrounding area. Plus, the foods that we get are so amazing. I love the surprise factor of our weekly food baskets. You never know what you’re going to be getting and sometimes it’s a vegetable that we’ve heard of. So it helps push us out of our food-comfort zone a little bit and we discover new things and new ways to cook them.
Honestly though, my favorite part of this is the people. No joke whatsoever. Danny Swan and his team are remarkable. Each week there is a new theme and some sort of activity happening down at the market site. They almost always have bubbles and sidewalk chalk for Louis’ entertainment too. Lou loves going with us to get his ‘box of vegetables’. (Now if we could only convince him to EAT those vegetables!)

Do you have a local farming initiative in your area? Have you ever subscribed to a CSA program before? I highly recommend looking into one in your area if you haven’t before. It’s so worth it!
