Please stick with me as I probably cry a dozen or so times writing this.  This shirt and the fundraisers I do during the year are so incredibly important and personal to me.  I’ve chosen to host two fundraisers of my own through Handmade Escapade each year.  Both events are geared toward cancer and cancer patients…and for a very good reason.

Mostly my reasoning is this: Cancer just plain sucks.
It sucks!  It really does.  It’s stupid and rude and doesn’t care who you are, what you’re doing, how many plans you’ve made or how great of a person you are.  It shows up when it wants and you have to deal with it.

My big brother was diagnosed in his early 20’s with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  What an Earth shaking thing to have happen to someone so close to you.  So young.  So healthy!  I remember hearing the news while I was at work and completely losing it.  I felt so helpless.  Not too long after that, my Auntie was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  Seriously.  Enter Earth shaking #2.

So I decided to do the only thing I could do…and that was attempt to raise money (and make hats) for other patients that might be going through the same thing Aunt Vicki and Billy were.  Maybe I’m not making a huge splash in the pond with my work but I was empowered by the idea of helping others.  Even if I made one person’s fight against cancer a little easier, it was worth it.

Sure, this is happening during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  But I think all cancers are important to be made aware of.  Women’s health, men’s health…the whole shebang.  Take care of your body.  Pay attention to the signals it gives you.  Get regular checkups.  Early detection is so important and that’s what dedicating an entire month to an awareness cause is all about.

My shirt is a different color ribbon than what’s listed in my shop.  Hopefully it’s not too misleading.  But the ribbon awareness colors for Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma are purple and green and I wanted to show my support for both of those incredibly important people in my life.  After two rounds of chemo and a stem cell transplant, Billy remains in remission to this date.  (Go Billy!)  Hopefully we can say the same for Aunt Vicki soon, but right now she is still fighting the good fight.

This round of shirts is dedicated to my beautiful, amazing, strong, kickass Auntie.  I love you to pieces and admire your strength.  I tried to be as tough as her in this photo.  I’m not really pulling it off.  You can all make fun of me if you’d like.

Anywho.  After this long introduction.  This year’s shirts have launched and are available in the shop HERE.  Some of the proceeds this time around will be donated to the Think Pink Charity Auction held in Wheeling.  Think Pink proceeds benefit the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Diagnostic and Treatment Fund, which focuses on heightening awareness of breast cancer and generating funds to aid underinsured West Virginia women in diagnosing and fighting cancer.

I wanted to think more locally with the donations.  Think Pink totally fits the bill.

Don’t hesitate if you want this shirt!  As with every year before this, once October is through this design will be retired.  You have only one month to get your hands on this inspired piece of clothing!
