Thread Therapy Fabric

Mar 1, 2017

Erin from Thread Therapy Fabrics contacted me about her new round of custom prints and asked if I wanted to sew something up with her geometric roses.  Yes, girl, yes.  Of course.  I am a huge sucker for a geo print and I ADORE floral fabrics.  Sign me up!

Thread Therapy Fabrics and Erin are based out of Australia.  So it took a hot minute before the post office brought me the fabric that I was drooling over.  But it was totally worth the wait.  I was send a 1/2 yard and WOULD NOT give up on my dreams of turning it into a shirt for myself.

Seriously.  I neeeeeeded it as a shirt.  I knew colorblocking would be necessary but I wanted to do it differently than I usually do.  If I’m gaining anything (besides access to incredible designers and fabric friends and new prints) with sewing strikeoffs, it’s that I’m being pushed into a new level of creativity.  Like: how can I showcase these prints AND make something functional at the same time?

This is quite possibly my new favorite tee.  So glad that I only had enough to make it in a short sleeve, because I’m ready to wear it ALL spring and summer.  I was mildly nervous that the white/black stripe would be too much of a contrast.  However, I am a huge fan of mixing prints and decided to go for it.  It’s a perfect pair of prints….I’m going to need to steal more roses from TTF so I can make this combo again and again and again.

It was 8am on a Saturday morning when I decided to bend my brain and figure out how to make the lines and blocking match up.  Luckily, I’d had at least one coffee already…so I was awake enough to not turn it into a disaster.

Here’s a crude drawing of how I made it happen.  You have to remember to cut the diagonals in mirror images on the front and back.  And to add 1/2″ above AND below the line that you want to cut on, so you aren’t stealing any length from your finished top.

I squeeeeeeeezed every inch of fabric that I could get out of the roses.  So much so that i even decided to cut a vneck because I only had enough fabric left to piece a neckband.  I figured that a vneck wouldn’t hurt to have a seam in the front AND back…so I did it!  And I love it.

What shirt pattern did I use to make this beauty?  The Made for Mermaids Mama Mya, of course!  It’s one of my favorite shirts ever, and my favorite aline style top.  It’s fitted enough in the bust for me to not lose my curves and make me feel frumpy, and flowy enough at the hips that I can have a fat day (because we all have those) and still feel good about myself.

This fabric, along with a ton of other gorgeous prints, are on pre-order starting March 2.  And because Australia is basically a day ahead of us here in the States, that means it’s available NOW!!  Yay!!

The roses are in two colorways.  Mine is printed on grey, and there’s also a gorgeous blue background.  Go check out all of the prints from Round 4 on Thread Therapy’s Site HERE!  This round of pre-orders is running from March 2 – March 23.
