Wild & Wanderful

Toddlers are jerks.

Before I start getting dirty looks thrown my way, let me tell you that Louis is my world.  I don’t make a single move anymore without considering how it could affect him.  But sometimes…he’s a real jerk.

Take last night for instance.

He was playing with a glow stick that he got in his kid’s meal at Subway.  All evening, he had that thing clutched in his hand.  In fact – I think he had ahold of it at 5:00 with he and Bennett came to pick me up from work.  And when we went to bed….well, he had it then too.  And refused to let me take it away.  I wasn’t allowed to hide it under his stuffed dog that he sleeps next to either.  So there is was, laying next to him, in all of it’s glowing glory.

The three of us almost always go to bed at the same time.  We weren’t blessed with a child that falls asleep at a normal hour.  We were blessed with one that will {usually} sleep through the entire night but wakes up super early and goes to bed when we do.  Whenever his daily 1-hour nap dissolves into no nap at all, I’m not sure if Bennett and I will ever have a sane moment again.

Anyway, all three of us headed to bed last night at the same time.  And all three were asleep for about a full hour before “it” started.  I have no idea what was wrong with Louis.  I’m not sure there really was anything wrong.  He just kept waking up and waking up….and waking up.  After two diaper changes (which NEVER happen during the night) and several moments of moving him from his bed to our bed and back to his, we finally got him back to sleep cuddled between the two of us.

Well.  He was asleep at least.

Remember that glow stick I was telling you about?  Let’s just say that it never got forgotten.  It was THE BRIGHTEST thing I have ever tried to sleep next to.  Clutched in that cute, chubby little hand was a beacon of light that wouldn’t quit.  Right in my face.  Basically screaming at me.

5:30 am comes around.  Guess who was sitting up in our bed, DEMANDING that the lights be turned on because he was awake?  Yep.  That charming little darling of ours.  Wake up it is!  We started moving around, I got ready for work, Louis was given a little snack and got to watch Pingu on my iPhone.  He was pleasant as can be.

Bennett offered to drive me to work.  And on the way….both of us were joking about how brain dead we were because of our lack of sleep.  I looked back to say something to the little guy but stopped because…

…because he was sleeping.  Soundly.  Because he’s two and he can do things like that.  But his parents have to somehow manage to function for an entire day and be pleasant about it.

Like I said.  He’s a jerk.
