Hold onto your butts! (That’s what Samuel L. Jackson says in Jurassic Park, right? RIGHT?!) You are about to develop a crush on crayons. If you don’t think that can happen, just you wait. Because I’m crushing hard.
I wanted something fun and dinosaur themed to put in the gift bags for the kiddos in attendance at Louis’ dinosaur birthday party. What do toddler loves to do? Color, of course. So these little dino crayons were born…inspired by some posts that I’ve seen on (this) website.
- Crayons you’re willing to destroy and melt. I found a bulk amount (here).
- Silicone mold. In any shape you’d like. We obviously went with dinosaurs and used this one (here).
- A soon-to-be 3-year old who wants to help but makes things a little more difficult. :)
Preheat your oven to 200 degrees F.
Peel the labels off of all of the crayons. This will be the most painstakingly long process…unless you have a hubby who discovers a brilliant way to remove them without much worry. Still. Long process. It’s a lot of crayons.
The crayons need to be broken into small chunks and you can do it one of two ways: snap them with your fingers or cut them with scissors. I started with the finger-snapping method but it took more effort and I wasn’t able to make them as small as I could with scissors. So scissors it was! And my kitchen shears worked just as good as anything.
You can choose to mix the colors up to create a fun rainbow-esque crayon or keep them separate. We chose to have them single colored. So I busted out my trusty ole’ solo cups to keep them separate for me until I was ready to melt the individual colors. Pretty, right?
Bake these at 200 degrees for 15 minutes. That was the magic combo for us. Anything longer and the wax got too hot and was stripping color from the top layers and saturating the bottom. So we had some crayons with white backs. No sweat. Perfection is for boring people, right?
Fill the holes of your mold as full as those little puppies will let you. As you can see, I forgot to take a better “in progress” picture and I’ve got this one of three-ish finished ones and the others ready to melt. We had one heck of a time getting the brontosaurs dudes out of the mold without snapping their poor little necks and decapitating them. They had to be re-melted a few extra times to try and reshape them. Sorry brontos! I meant no harm!
Insta-crush, right? Seriously. They are too stinking cute!!
I packaged them up in little treats bags and some labels that I made out of Kraft paper. And a little “thank you’ for coming to the party was born.
^^That saying above? I loved it so much, I decided to put it on Bennett’s shirt that he’ll be wearing on Saturday. Because we are “that” family that dresses in theme. Don’t worry…there will be pictures. Rest easy.
Now go make some dinosaur crayons for yourself!
