For the 4th installment of Handmade for the Holidays vendor features, Samantha from Sam I Am Art is hanging out on my blog for the day. Have you checked out the Handmade for the Holidays featured vendors yet? You totally should! I can feel the walls of Christmas closing in on us!
K: Where did you come up with your business name?
S: Well as many other people who's names are Sam or Samantha I have always been given the nickname " Sam I Am " from the Dr. Seuss story of course, and no I do not like green eggs and ham lol! So SamIamArt seemed catchy and something people would remember.
K: Which items do you enjoy making the most?
S: I absolutely love making custom art for people. The last one I did was a reproduction of the painting from the pixar movie " UP " of their house that they put over the fireplace. It was my favorite because it was a challenge to recreate something so famous and also because of the story. This was for a husband and wife who were going to put it over their fireplace. Which they did and she told me after putting it up every morning her husband turns on the light over it so she can see it when gets up!! How awesome is that! To know I made something that makes someone's day like that means so much!
K: What are the greatest struggles with owning your own business?
S: For me it is just having confidence in what I do and myself. I always question weather my work is good enough, but then I make that sale or hear a story from a customer like the one above and I realize I am good at what I do and I am impacting people through my art! It has been a struggle but I am starting to build that confidence.
K: What are your greatest achievements so far?
S: My greatest achievement by far was when I was asked to donate a painting to the Make A Wish Foundation for a little girl suffering from leukemia that wanted her room to look like the ocean with dolphins swimming through it. To know that my painting will be such a big part of something like this just overwhelmed me!
K: How/Where did you learn how to sew/craft/create/design?
S: I learned at a young age I could draw and fell in love with art. Ever since I am always involved with art. I took classes throughout high school and a few semesters of art in college. In high school I did graphic design, architecture, and regular art classes along with art club. The rest has been self taught.
K: What inspires your designs?
S: People and Nature.
K: What is your favorite part about selling/making handmade items?
S: My favorite part is hearing peoples stories about why they purchased the item or what they did with it. From sending one of my cards to someone starting chemo to someone who sent one of my prints as a symbol of strength for a family who lost a loved one. Those are the things that have really meant the most to me!
K: Name one thing in your craft room you couldn't live without?
S: My paint brushes they are an extension of me!
And of course….a little game of THIS or THAT:
- COFFEE / TEA: I cant live without my coffee or my keurig!
- GOLD / SILVER: Silver. Its just classy and simple to me.
- BIG CITY / SMALL TOWN: I am a really shy girl for the most part ( till you get to know me ) but I also love what a big city has to offer!
- BOOK / MOVIE: With 3 kids I don't have much time for books. We are huge movie fans in my family!
- DVD / BIG SCREEN: We have an awesome TV and nothing beats sitting on a comfy couch to watch a movie.
- JEWELRY / GADGETS: I love simple jewelry. I like gadgets too.
- FLATS / HEELS: I’m SHORT!! I try to always have some type of a heel on my shoe lol:)
- VINTAGE / NEW: Vintage. I love the history of an old item and the story it can tell.
She was also super sweet and decided to give readers $5 off of any order over $15. Just use the code “WILD” in her shop to take advantage! Thanks so much, Sam!
