Wild & Wanderful

Canaan Valley.

Back when we were being horrible co-worker baristas at Barnes & Noble café in Morgantown, Ashley and I declared that we were “single gals” and would be each other’s wifeys.  Fast forward 9 years and we’re both married, mommas and happy in our current choices.  Funny how things change, huh?

Ashley’s family owns a cabin in Canaan Valley and asked if us McKinleys wanted to join her and her crew there for Memorial Day weekend.  Hell to the yes.  We jumped at the chance.  Not only is the Davis/Thomas area basically our favorite getaway in West Virginia…but we also hadn’t gotten to meet Ash & Drew’s handsome little man yet and this was the perfect opportunity.

The weather couldn’t have been nicer.  At first we thought it was a little chilly for a late May weekend but the more we were out and about hiking and exploring the sites, the better we were with the cooler temperatures.  The sun was shining and that’s all we really needed.

Isn’t West Virginia gorgeous?

Tucker is the sweetest little boy.  And happiest!  He was quite content at all times…I’m not sure I can remember him crying at all during the entire time we were with them.  He reminds me so much of Louis when he was a babe.

I’m really proud of Ash and Drew and their parenting skills.  Not that they need my approval at all…but they get two giant thumbs up from me.  They are naturals!  Everything was so easy going and Tucker seems so happy and so incredibly loved.  I was all but bursting at the seams while watching my dear friends dote over their little one.

Just up the path from the cabin was a beautiful spot that overlooked most of the valley.  It was an easy enough climb that Louis made it…and yet somehow I ended up carrying his 35+ pounds of cuteness around the majority of the time.  He at least enjoyed it for a hot minute.

I think Bennett was pretty happy about all of the photo opportunities that he had.  The sunsets were unreal (and the view was amazing from the porch!), Canaan has endless amounts of places for photos and the weather was in full cooperation the entire time.  I don’t think he’s had the chance to go through the pictures yet but I’m hoping that he shares what he’s captured with everyone.  From what I saw, they were amazing.  As always.

As we get older, it’s interesting to watch our friendships change.  Some people we fall out of touch with, some friendships are intentionally ended…and some continue on and grow with our ever-changing lives.  I’m happy to have had Ash in my life for as long as I have.  She’s seen me through some of my wilder college days and my less wilder early marriage/parenting days.  She’s been a blessing and I’m proud to call her my wifey.

We live in completely different cities, in completely different states and live completely different lives.  But when we get together, it’s like nothing has changed.  And now we’re raising a second generation of McKinleys and Archers so they can some day be best friends too.

We sure know how to make cute babies, don’t we? :)
