Honest to goodness, I think I just made the summer dress of my dreams. 🍉
I didn’t go looking for this fabric, but when it fell in my lap (or I guess…when it fell into my vision on my phone while I was browsing Michael’s new fabric offerings) I ordered it IMMEDIATELY and knew what I wanted it to be. I seriously am dying. It’s so cute.

If you’re anything like me, you might be ready to make a bunch of “check out my watermelons” jokes. But I promise I’ll try and keep that on lock. Ha.
I only ordered 1 yard of each fabric, so I really had to squeeeeeeeeze the skirt onto that yard panel. I used the Charleston Crossover pattern (one of the designs I released via Patterns for Pirates) and the skirt portion is a half circle, so they do eat up a good amount of fabric in order to get the fullness of the skirt. Part of me considered making this as a separate skirt / top, so I could wear them with other things. But then I had a real serious talk with myself and was like “Katy, when are you ever going to wear either of these pieces by themselves? They belong together.”
So obvs, I went with the dress option.

I haven’t worn this cutie quite yet because it’s not exactly summer around here. I mean…the weather has been incredible the last few days. But watermelon dress season will have to hold off until at least June / July.
Would you believe me if I told you that, while I was taking these photos, “Watermelon Crawl” by Tracy Byrd started playing on Apple Music?
First, Siri, stop being a creep. But also, well played my lady.

The only thing I’d truly change about my watermelon dress is the fabric base. I knew what I was getting myself into going into it…but I was too excited and ordered anyway. It’s a bullet fabric, which has a polyester feel to it, and it’s more stiff and structured. And not super soft.
While the print is gorgeous. I would have much preferred something else against my skin. It won’t stop me from wearing it. But just fair warning in case you wanted to reproduce my dress somehow.
That being said, I did find some watermelon + rind prints at Raspberry Creek Fabrics, so you can pick out your own base and have it printed on something more pleasant!

What do you think? Would you make / wear this dress? I’m SO EXCITED to rock it this summer!
