Baymax Inspired Hat | Free Crochet Pattern

Feb 17, 2015

We were invite to a Big Hero 6 birthday party this past weekend.  And although we didn’t get to go (because Louis was a sickie) I still couldn’t resist making this adorable Baymax-inspired hat.  An all-white hat for a 5-year old is a dangerous thing, so I thought making the warm marshmallow in his supersuit instead.  And then I thought I’d share this with you all as well!

If you haven’t seen Big Hero 6 yet, you should.  It’s SUCH a good movie.  I cried a minimum of three times and laughed a ton more.  Such a feel good flick with superheroes.  It was the perfect McKinley storm.

*As always, you’re more than welcome to sell finished products from this pattern.  I only ask that you give me credit and link back to this pattern.  Please play nice and don’t claim the pattern or photos as your own.  If you do end up making a hat from my pattern, I’d love to see the results!  Link me to your blog, email me a photo (hello@wildandwanderful.com) or post it to my Facebook page.  I want to see what you can do!!

Earflap Braids:

— For each braid, I cut 9 pieces of yarn at around 30″ each. I say “around” because I just eyeball how long I’d want them to be. You can make them longer/shorter to your liking.

— Fold that group of yarn in half and at the top (the loop end), pull the loop through one of the ear flaps of the hat in the middle, just enough to string t
he cut ends of that group through. Now your strings should be secured on your ear flap.

— Divide the hanging strings into three sections of 6 strings and braid away. Knot near the bottom and clean up your ends with scissors.

–Repeat on the other ear flap.

I hand stitched all of the pieces onto the main hat by hand this go-round.  Baymax’s face is pretty simple, with the two eyes and a line connecting them.  So just take a teeny piece of black yarn and do an embroidery style stitch from one side to the next.  The purple circles will help hold down the red flaps on the sides of the head, especially when reinforced with stitching, rather than glueing like I tend to (be lazy about) do.

Isn’t Baymax just the sweetest?  I want my own healthcare companion!!

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below and I’ll try and walk you through them.  Thanks!  Happy crocheting!

That is too adorable! I wish I knew how to crochet. It's the one crafty thing I never saw my mother do, so I never picked it up.

I have to wait until I'm ready to cry to watch Big Hero 6. I cry at commercials though so I don't know what I'm waiting on.
