Layer Me Up Shirt by Patterns for Pirates

Mar 2, 2015

Is it getting old that I’m only ever sewing Patterns for Pirates things for myself?

Guess what?  I don’t care.  I love her patterns.  They’re always in style…but in a classic, I-can-wear-this-forever-and-a-day kind of way.  They are easy to sew up. And she includes about a million different variations in each pattern.  So you could sew eight billion shirts from one pattern and never feel like you’re wearing the same clothes every day.  For serious.

I didn’t test this pattern.  I sat patiently in the shadows, waiting for Judy to release the Layer Me Up shirt.  Why?

Because it had so many elements that I wanted in a shirt.

Those elements?

Despite my never ending curves, I like form-fitting shirts.  I also am crazy busty, so when I wear most tshirts, the length becomes way shorter on me because my boobs take up half of the length.  Not joking.  It’s a serious issue that all shirts are stupid short on me, even though I don’t have a long torso.  AND, I hate necklines being too high.  I’m not trying to show off said giant boobs (I swear), I just feel like it’s more flattering on me to have a little collarbone showing.  I have a big, round head and the less amount of things next to my face, the better.

Let’s first talk neckline.  It’s a scoop neckline.  And Judy teaches you how to create a seamless version on the hem so it looks all professional and such.  I adore it.

And then the length.  The benefits of having a tall woman as the designer is that she doesn’t make things for shrimps.  Her patterns always have several lengths you can choose from.  I actually used the tunic length of this shirt and it hits me exactly where I like my tees.

As for the fit, it’s great.  This is designed as a shirt that you can layer, so there isn’t much give.  There is a tank version that I basically will be making 102980234982304 of for this summer.  I never wear anything without a tanktop under it and I love that I can make my own now easily.

So again, Judy hit this one out of the park.  A fast, easy sew for a wardrobe staple is perfection for a girl like me.  Excuse me while I go check my fabric stash to see what else I can come up with.

I found the star fabric on SpandexHouse.com (back when I was ambitious and wanted to make a swimsuit out of it): HERE.  And the red/white stripe is from GirlCharlee.com: HERE.

I'm a shrimp so I normally have to shorten her patterns but I still love all of Judy's patterns too! Thanks for a fun read. I laughed out loud several times! And your shirt looks amazing 🙂

Haha. So we have opposite struggles with self-sewing! It'd be so hard to be a designer to try and accommodate all of the body types out there. I feel like Judy does a great job of it and she's super sweet, so it's hard to want to sew anything but P4P designs.
