I saw a shirt online a while back that had a crocheted rose sleeved and I HAAAAAD to have it. But I’d never made a granny square rose before, so I sat with my crochet hook and some yarn until I had it all figured out. After googling/pinteresting a while, I realized that there weren’t really any patterns out there. So I thought I’d share it with you all.
Dia de los Muertos is such a beautiful, cultural holiday. I was a little nervous when Melissa asked me if I wanted to join the tour because I’m not Mexican and I didn’t want to dishonor this Mexican holiday. So I thought I might stay away from sugar skulls (albeit them being insanely gorgeous) and wanted to touch on something that’s less cultural specific and more just plain beautiful. Because roses are amazing.
But they also make me think is stunning Mexican women, red lipstick and flawless skin. So I thought it could work for sassy Melissa’s fabulous tour. I hope you like it!
Crochet Granny Square Rose
Materials:
– Red Worsted Weight Yarn
– Green Worsted Weight Yarn
– Crochet hook size H-8 (5.0 mm)
– Tapestry needle, for weaving in ends
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
st – stitch
sl st- slip stitch
DC – Double Crochet
TR – Triple Crochet
Magic Ring – Find a great tutorial including video HERE
Round 1: Magic ring, DC 12 into ring. DO NOT join. (This creates a little more texture and dimension.) Slip stitch into ring.
Round 2: We are going to be making foundation chains for petals.
Ch 3. Three DCs from the first round in, you will SC into the magic ring. Ch 3, skip 3 DC from the first round and SC into the magic ring. Repeat two more times. This will have created four loops for you to build your petals. Sl st.
Round 3: In each of the loops that you created in the last round, we will be making the petals.
DC, ch 1, TR 4, ch 1, DC. Repeat in each loop to create the second row of petals. Sl st.
Round 4: We are going to be making another foundation round for more petals. Eight this time!
Ch 3, in the center of the first petal, you are going to SC into the foundation row. Ch 3, SC into the gap between the petals. Repeat all the way around, creating 8 loops. Sl St.
Round 5: In first ch foundation, 1 DC, ch, 4 DC, ch, 1 DC. Repeat 7 times around. Sl st.
Round 6: Change colors. In the one of the outer petals, in the middle of the 4 DC (at the top), pull up thread and CH 2. DC 2, Ch 2. [DC 3 in middle, bottom chain foundation of next petal. Ch 2. 3 DC in middle-top of next petal. Ch 2. In same space, 3 DC.] Repeat from [] all the way around. Join.
Tadah! You’ve done it. Now complete the granny square however you’d like! Your creativity is the limit. If you’re looking for some inspiration, I’ve already blogged how I took this design and turned it into a back yoke of a new (amazingly awesome) sweatshirt. Check it out HERE.

These are gorgeous! I wish I could create something that beautiful. How did you learn to crochet? I need to start somewhere so I can make these and then sew them onto a shirt and be a mini-Katy!

In round 1, am I correct in assuming it’s “Magic ring, crochet 12 DC into ring?”

Searched forever to find a rose that was worked in one piece, so happy to find this, took some working out and many restarts but I finally had that “ureka” moment when it all starts to make sense lol, I’m making some of these to add to headbands for my nieces, thankyou for sharing
Oh I’m so glad that you were able to use this! It took me forever to figure it out too…I hate doing the roses that you work as a long strand and then roll up. They never look as good everyone elses.
