May the 4th:: 2022

May 4, 2022

Happy May the 4th, friends!  Next to Halloween, I think it’s safe to say that this is my favorite holiday.  I mean…..everyone celebrating Star Wars in one unified front?  Sign me up!

As per my usual antics, I made a new outfit for the day.  I know, I know.  I didn’t make anything new for Bennett and Louis this year.  They’ll get something cool soon, I’m sure.  We are going through a phase with Louis where he’s figuring out his own style needs and I’m trying not to overstep my boundaries on that issue.

Okay!  Let’s talk about what I made!  I’m pretty geeked about it!

To put it lightly, I colorblocked the shit out of everything for this outfit to happen.  HA!  I did start with patterns that had some of the work laid out for me…and then I took it all further to make my Star Wars vision come to life.  First up was my leggings.  I thought it would be super fun to have lightsabers run up the side of some bottoms.

I used the Peg Legs - Add Ons as my starter.  It has an option for side panels.  Okay, easy right?  Well…kinda.  Because in order to make sabers, I needed to block the panels into tons of rectangles and then piece it all back together before completing each leg.  I had the hardest time deciding if I wanted to get super technical and pick specific lightsaber hilts…or if I should just take it easy on myself (ha) and make a generic looking one with the classic red / blue kyber crystal colors.

I opted for the classic version.  It still took a lot of brainpower and a little more time than I typically spend making leggings…but I’m over the moon with the results.

The top took me a little longer to decide upon.  I ended up settling on the Made for Mermaids Penelope Princess Seam dress.  I had this flash of an idea to have the opening crawl from A New Hope going down the front.  And because it has that classic look of it scrolling and getting smaller and smaller as the story continues on….I thought a princess seam style would be perfect to get that look.

And it was!

It took two full sheets of HTV and some eyeballing to get it to all line up…but I **think** I got the entire crawl onto the front.  I’m still not convinced I got the wording exactly right but I googled for it about a million times so I hope I’m close enough!

I, of course, didn’t leave the pattern alone.  I wanted my top to mostly be black.  But I really needed the crawl and princess seams to seem purposeful.  So I added a second level of blocking on the outer pieces of the Penelope dress and used the same fabrics from the lightsabers to kinda continue that whole Vader / Luke duality.

If you’re wondering, my annoying self also didn’t leave the back of the dress alone.  I double blocked the front and then un-colorblocked the back, haha.  I thought I’d done enough so I overlapped the pieces on the back side of the Penelope and just had a single back bodice piece instead of the three that the pattern is drafted for.

All in all, I’d say I had a pretty stellar idea and execution for my Star Wars Day garb this year.   Did you / do you dress up for the holiday?
