Tie Up Top, by Patterns for Pirates

Aug 6, 2022

Who is excited about another Patterns for Pirates sewing pattern release?  I know I am!  Judy worked up one of the cutest front tying tops and I’m jazzed to to tell you all about it.  So let’s get on with the show!

The Tie Up Top patterns are simple knit patterns with a little extra something!  They feature set-in sleeves, with about a million sleeve options, two different necklines, and two different hem lengths with adorable split front ties that make for the cutest top!

Included in the Tie Up Top patterns:

  • Crew and V Necklines
  • Tank, Short, 3/4, Flutter, Long (cuffed) and Long (flutter) sleeves
  • Crop w/short ties, Crop w/long ties, and Shirt w/short ties hem lengths
  • Looser, relaxed fit bodice
  • Optional chest pocket
  • Drafted for knit fabrics (my favorites are rayon blends, yummy rib knits, waffle knits, ITY/DTY, and soft jersey knits)

Let’s break down the three that I made and photographed during testing!

Options Sewn: Crop Length w/short ties | Short Sleeves| Crew Neckline | Eyelet Knit Fabric from ???

Because I used a fabric that had some obvious holes in it, I paired this Tie Up Top with a Cross My Heart Cami underneath and actually made it so I could wear it to a concert I went to last month with Bennett.  It was super comfy and I loved the layering with the two pieces.

I’m not much of a crop top wearing girl, to the point that I messaged Judy and was like “did this crop length get shorter than the others?”  And she gently reminded me that this one was actually longer than the rest, haha.  Clearly I’m not mentally or emotionally prepared for crop length, I guess.  At least not on it’s own.  But layered with a cami?  I’m in!

I actually took the lazy way out and didn’t hem this version.  I thought the eyelet fabric was okay to leave unhemmed, especially on the ties.  I might go back through and shorten / hem / do something with the sleeves.  But I haven’t decided yet if I need or want to.

Options Sewn: Shirt Length w/short ties | Flutter Sleeves| V Neckline | Waffle Knit fabrics from a wholesaler (sorry!)

I really wanted to play up the front seam and add a little West Virginia to my makes this time around.  I mean…are you surprised by this?  I had some of these waffle knit fabrics floating around in the perfect blue, gold and white colors, so it seemed like kismet to me!

It actually makes me want to sew some versions of these up for the next Oglebayfest show that I sell at.  I think they’d be SO popular and loved!  The relaxed fit is a big winner with most people, and the blocking and ties are just the cutest.  ::heads to fabric website and adds a thousand yards of WV colors to the cart::

If there’s one thing I’m obsessed with in my wardrobe right now, it’s fun sleeves.  Judy filled the patterns with tons of sleeve options and I’d have to say that the flutter is still my favorite.  Of course, waffle knits don’t have a ton of movement to them, but it’s still super cute paired with this sleeve style.  You won’t hear me complaining!

Options Sewn: Shirt Length w/short ties | Long Sleeves w/cuffs| Crew Neckline | Sweater Knit from Walmart’s mystery fabric bins

I grabbed this fabric during the dead of summer, thinking that I’d eventually find something to make with it.  I couldn’t pass up those dang super cheap fabrics that they have in the mystery bins at Walmart.  I don’t go there often, but when I do, I head straight there to see what they’ve got.  Sometimes it’s a major winner like this brushed, ribbed sweater knit!  I love it so much!

Hands down this is my favorite Tie Up Top that I’ve made so far.  Which is stupidly annoying because it’s still 10,000 degrees outside and I can’t wear it yet.  The worrrrrrrst.

The second Judy shared what she had in drafting, I knew I wanted to make a sweater out of it.  Using a ribbed knit kind of disguised the front seam a little bit and the ties on the front are just so cute paired with this fabric.  I’m also loving the cuffed sleeves and how just this whole top came together so beautifully.

Also check out how modelesque I am with my posing, trying to show what the sleeves look like.  Ha.  Oh my goodness.  I’ll make sure not to show these pictures to Louis, who is currently a full blown tween and calling me cringe on basically everything I do lately.

Come on fall!  Get here a little quicker so I can wear my new Tie Up Top while sitting outside around the campfire, drinking pumpkin flavored something, talking about how much I like you as a season the best.

Are you convinced you need to try out this new pattern yet?  Which version that i sewed up is your favorite?
