I am unbelievably excited to share with y’all this FREE crochet pattern! It’s been in the works since July, if you can believe it. I was creating a capsule wardrobe for my Scotland/Ireland trip and whipped up the candy colored granny square cardigan of my dreams…and when I shared it on Instagram, I had a ton of people asking me how I went about making it.
Of course, my extra self couldn’t just tell you. I had to create an entire tutorial with graphics and color charts and checklists and coloring pages! And I’m super duper jazzed to share it with you!

I don’t teach you how to crochet in this download, so you’ll need to know the basics for sure. The stitches used to create this cardigan are as follows:
- Double Crochet
- Slip Stitch
- Chain Stitch
- Single Crochet
- Magic Ring
I do give you a little hand holding, in the form of written + video tutorials on how to create a basic granny square and a triangle granny square. Plus, I’ve got resources on how to “Join As You Go” crochet on my blog and YouTube. I promise that I’m here to help you make the cardigan of your dreams, so whatever resources I can provide — I’m going to give them to you! I’m so excited to see how you work up your own version!
One of my favorite parts of this tutorial is all of the illustrations + the checklists I’ve provided. I’ve laid out how to create a duplicate of the cardigan I created for myself, with all of the colors and squares being spelled out for you. It’s going to be so easy for you this way! The back and front bodices have their own checklists, so you can easily keep track of where you are in the square creation process. Plus if you were looking to use a different color combo than what I did, you can write the colors in and easily reference the color chart for your own selection.
I used a total of 11 colors, all with the JoAnn Fabrics line of yarns called 'Big Twist Value'. It’s an acrylic yarn that is pretty soft and has a wide variety of colors. I’ve converted to this brand for most of my crochet projects because I have a JoAnn Fabrics local to me, and they always have these yarns in stock. Consistency is key, am I right?

I’m also excited to share that I created some coloring pages for you! In the event that you’re not at all interested in using the amount of colors I did, or the same ones I used, and want a chance to layout your own color combo before you get to work, I’ve got your back.
Just grab some colored pencils (or crayons….or markers….whichever you prefer) and get to coloring!

I truly am so excited to see what you’re able to do with this tutorial that I’m sharing! Like all patterns, it’s a great jumping off point if you were thinking of adding length, switching up the sleeves, increasing / decreasing the rounds in each of the squares, etc.
Pretty please with sugar on top share with me if you end up making something for yourself! I’d die to see your work!

Don’t forget to tag me #wildandwanderfulblog (Iām @wildandwanderfulblog on Instagram). The idea of seeing something you’ve created from a tutorial I shared gives me ALL THE FEELS. Don’t leave me hanging!

Oh Katy, this is so cute! Loving all the colours in your granny squares too.
Hi, am a regular crocheteer and love the design, plus it’s FREE, some give the instructions and ask for the amount of the made garment, this is so helpful with beginners and overall everyone, love you
Thank you for this! I’ve been wanting to make a sweater and this gave me the nudge I needed!
Oh I hope it sparks something in you to make one! They’re so fun!
I have filled in the blank three times and have never received the free pattern. I would really like to get it- could you send it to me? Thank you.
Apologies! I switched newsletter services and apparently all of the automations weren’t firing like they should have been. If you want to give it another go, the system should be working for that link now.
I love it. I will love to crochet. It beautiful.
Hey Katy!
I am following your pattern and love it !! But I would like to ask if you could clarify how many rounds stitches per rounds are the sleeves made off ? Also it looks like you are decreasing at the end of the sleeve ! I am stuck š would love some help ā¤ļøš
I actually didn’t do any decreases on this sleeve, I left it a super wide sleeve. Stiches per round? I believe it’s 20 clusters of 3 + 1 chain between them.
Love love ā¤ļø
love this pattern, and can’t wait to try! But how much yarn did you use overall? (for the smaller version!)
This pattern is fantastic! I’m excited to make one for my daughter. I love the options at the end to design the colors yourself. That’s the part that’s so hard for me to visualize. Thank you!!!
I’m so glad it will be helpful for you!
I love you SO MUCH for these granny square coloring pages!!! I’ve been trying to find something similar for days with no luck. You’re the absolute BEST!!! I cannot wait to get my squares planned, crocheted, and turned into a cardi!
This makes me so happy to read! Thank you for finding me and hopefully you share when youāve finished whatever project comes of it. ā¤ļø
Hi Katy,
I would love to have your Candy Granny Square Cardigan. I have sent my email 4 times and still have not received it yet. I was hoping you could help me.

Is this still available? I subscribed but never received the email for the cardigan pattern.
