I really wanted to have a special post to talk just about the different lengths and fabrics that I used for my tester versions of the new Moseyer Skirt (a FREE pattern that I just released on Wild + Wanderful).  But before we get into it too much, let’s go over what all this new skirt pattern has to offer!

The skirt features:

• Four Hem Lengths (Mini, Knee, Tea and Maxi)
• Quarter Circle / A-Line Skirt Silhouette.
• Designed for woven (non-stretch) + knit fabrics.
• Slight Tulip Hem on Skirt Front.
• Full-Wrap Skirt w/Extra-Long Waistband that ties in front.

With this download, you will receive an easy-to-print, color coded pattern with a NO TRIM page feature.  You will also be able to turn on/off layers so you can print only the size you need.  The zip file includes four print formats: Letter, A4, A0 (printshop), and Projector.

There is a full step-by-step color tutorial included, to help guide you through your skirt making process, as well as a detailed start-to-finish video tutorial.

Since it’s my child pattern, I obviously wanted to sew up each version.  And I did it all with different fabric types (though they were all knits) to really give myself an idea of what I liked the most.  Spoiler alert: I liked them all.

MINI LENGTH: Lace Bonded Textured Knit Fabric from Minerva

Okay, so this length and skirt was my favorite of the bunch of them.  I am a sucker for mini length skirts.  Maybe all those years of sewing for Judy over at P4P has turned me into this person.  But I also think it’s okay to show a little extra leg, even if they have bruises / visible scars / veins, etc.  Just wear what you want.

Minerva’s website describes this fabric as a stretch knit with 25% horizontal and 0% vertical.  I think they’re being a bit generous with the horizontal stretch…since I’d really only consider it to have a “mechanical” stretch.  AKA, I don’t think it’s stretchy at all.  It’s a mid-to-heavy weight fabric, with not much drape.  But it’s simply gorgeous and I’m obsessed with the bonded knit look to it.

KNEE LENGTH: Neon Floral Double Brushed Polyester from ???

I made this skirt knowing it’d be my second favorite, and it was for sure.  The neon floral as a skirt is SO. GOOD. and this fabric base is honestly a good choice for a pattern like this.  I have this epic love/hate relationship with DBP in general.  It’s always frustrating to me that the best prints are on this base, because I don’t really love wearing it all that much.  Especially in the summer, when this brushed polyester situation isn’t exactly the most breathable.

However, as a skirt?  It’s ace.  I’m a fan.

TEA LENGTH: Bubble Crepe from an old T&G Subscription shipment

Listen, if I’m being honest….I thought this was an immediate “give away” skirt.  I had no interest in either this length (I feel like it looks weird on me) or this busy fabric for a skirt.  And then I made it and you’ll have to rip it out of my cold dead hands.  I think it’s super cute, and such a good wardrobe piece for summer work wear.  I take back all of my early negative feelings about it.

This fabric base was great.  It has an okay amount of drape, and still swishes playfully when I walk around in it.  Sorry for doubting you, tea length skirt.  You’re a babe!

MAXI LENGTH: Yummy Ribbed Knit from May 2021’s Fabric for Pirates shipment

Goodness gracious, I don’t think I can even begin to explain just how obsessed I am with this fabric base.  Yummy ribbed knit is my JAM, y’all.  Not only it is deliciously soft to wear and comes in lots of gorgeous prints, but I’m smitten over it in a solid.  PLUS, since it’s mostly polyester, I’m able to sublimate print on it.  HOW AMAZING IS THAT??

Now, as a skirt — it was good but not great.  Out of all of the bases, it showed my tucked in shirt the most.  It gave me lines near my tummy where my shirt would bunch up naturally from moving around.  And while that’s not that big of a deal in person, in photos I feel like it’s accentuating the very portion of my body that I would really not like to highlight.  Otherwise, the drape is amazing, the weight is amazing, and the movement is amazing.

Full disclosure: I really do not function well in maxi length anything — so I gave this to my adorable cousin to wear.  It’s not the skirt or the fabric’s fault — it’s my own personal style preference.  Don’t worry — I have a mini length in this fabric and it’s perfection.
