Harry Potter-Inspired Beer Sweater :: Free Crochet Pattern

crochet patternKaty McKinleyComment

It's Harry Potter month for us and I am kicking off my tutorials with this cutiepie!

Why beer sweater, you ask?  Did you know that the word "koozie" is copyrighted...along with any derivative of it?  I just thought it was a word for the thing that goes around your soda cans and beer bottles.  It is not.  So I'm trying to train myself out of that word.  Beer sweater sounds fun, right??

Essentially, with this pattern, you are making a teeny and upside-down hat.  It'll fit on any conventional sized beer (or soda!) bottle and can.  And keeps the condensation off of your hands while shouting out your wizardry nerdiness at the same time.  Perfect, right?

**Remember, you’re more than welcome to sell finished products from this pattern.  Although, maybe you shouldn't because HP is heavily copyrighted (just saying).  I only ask that you give me credit and link back to this pattern.  Please play nice and don’t claim the pattern or photos as your own.  If you do end up making a sweater from my pattern, I’d love to see the results!  Link me to your blog, email me a photo (katy@threadandgrain.com) or post it to my Facebook page.  I want to see what you can do!!

Crochet Harry Potter-Inspired Beer Sweater

Materials:

  • Yellow, Red, Off-White, Brown and Black Worsted Weight Yarn
  • Crochet hook size H-8 (5.0 mm)
  • Tapestry needle (for sewing in ends)
  • Fabric glue (if desired)

Abbreviations:

  • ch - chain
  • st - stitch
  • sl st- slip stitch
  • HDC - Half Double Crochet
  • Magic Ring - Find a great tutorial including video HERE

Main Pattern:

**Ch 1 at beginning of each round counts as first HDC.
[Using red] Magic Ring, 10 HDC in magic ring, join to first HDC. (10 HDC)
Round 2: Ch 1, HDC in same stitch.  2 HDC in each around, join. (20 HDC)
[Using yellow] Round 3: Ch 1, 2 HDC in next. [1 HDC in next, 2 HDC in next.] 9 times.  Join to first HDC. (30 HDC)
Round 4 - 15: Ch 1, HDC in each stitch.  Join to first HDC. (30 HDC)
finish off, weave in ends.

^^ Crochet pattern as above, alternating colors.  I thought that maybe this chart would help a little, since the pattern is simple but the colors switch a lot.  Rounds 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 are in red.  Rounds 9-13 are in off-white.  And rounds 14-15 are in brown.

Harry's Glasses:

[using black] Chain 15.  Join to 1st chain space to create a circle.
Chain an additional 15.  Join to 1st chain space, exactly where your first join was.  Finish off ends.

You can sew on the glasses.  However, in my epic laziness and corner-cutting ways...I always just choose to glue them on with some Fabri-Tac.  It's amazingly strong and works quickly.  Less stitching time, more admiring your cute work time!

If there are any questions, I'm happy to answer them!  Just ask away!
Happy crocheting!
