Darth Maul Mosaic Crochet Blanket | Free PDF Pattern, Left + Right-Handed Charts!

Aug 10, 2026

Ever since I learned about the mosaic crochet technique, all I’ve wanted to do is make a Star Wars blanket to cuddle under on our couch. Of course, I don’t think we actually need MORE crocheted blankets on our couch, but also…what’s one more going to hurt? Ha. There’s nothing more charming than having a bunch of handmade items, in full use, in your living room is there? I personally love that the couch is full of them.

I couldn’t decide what to do exactly. I considered doing a repeating pattern with small helmets and ships and the Star Wars logo. But then I realized that we don’t have a single item in our collection of fandom that properly celebrates Darth Maul. Or Maul. Or Old Master. (Well…besides the art on Bennett’s half sleeve with Maul + Kanan. But that’s his, not mine.)

So Maul it was! His character is honest to goodness one of my favorites in the Star Wars universe. He’s written so well. He’s so twisted and tortured…but he’s so intelligent and calculated. And has these weird moments of empathy that somehow makes you root for him in moments. I listened to an interview with Freddie Prinze Jr. comparing him to Sisyphus and it was such a great explanation of his story arc. Ugh. Maul is just so good.

ANYWAY. It felt like the perfect character to create a pattern for. And once I got all of the kinks worked out in said pattern, I was ready to roll! This blanket took me a bit longer than previous ones because it has been SO HOT here, and crocheting with a blanket on my lap was overheating me. I got back to it this past week to finish him up and I think it turned out just perfectly. Don’t you?

I went back and forth on the background (having it solid red or giving it a pattern) and I’m really glad that I went with the little plus signs. It just would have been empty without it, ya know? I also love that I gave his eyes some extra character by adding the yellow.

Here’s a quick video of me showing off my new creation!

Okay, so about the pattern. It was created using a mosaic overlay crochet technique. I do not teach you how to mosaic crochet in this. Or how to read a chart. Eventually I plan on adding that as a tutorial on the blog, but for now you’re going to need to rely on other creators to get you where you need to go. There are no special stitches in the pattern, all single and double crochets, but there are a couple of color changes when you’re using Color A…where you’ll need to switch from red to white/yellow to get the details.

Here are a couple of quick tips I can provide for mosaic crochet:

  • Cut and fasten off your yarn at the end of every row, don’t carry it forward.
  • This is a right-side-only technique.
    • No turning between rows.
    • Each new row begins again from the right edge (for right-handed crocheting) or the left edge (for left-handed crocheting).
  • DC stitches go into the front loop of the stitch two rows below it.
  • SC stitches go into the back loop of the stitch directly below it.
  • For border stitches, work SC through both loops (the full stitch).

Just pop your info into the form below and the charts will be emailed directly to your inbox. Because I know the brain gymnastics of flipping charts can be frustrating, I went ahead and made separate versions for left- and right-handed crocheters.

The blanket works up to be around 42” wide x 57” tall. I used a crochet hook size H-8 (5.0 mm) and Loops & Threads Worsted Yarn from Michaels (formerly Big Twist Value from JoAnn) in the following colors:

  • Varsity Red
  • Black
  • White
  • Varsity Gold

I hope that some fellow Star Wars fans can get some use out of this pattern!
