I helped test the original Boundless Dress from Patterns for Pirates back in 2015 — and I’m here again in 2018 with the update! We’ve been going through older patterns and tweaking the fit, as well as updating the files to fit with the new specs that we have (layers, A0 format, full range of sizes, etc) and the Boundless has been on our list for a while. What better time that springtime for a new dress?
So what was updated exactly?
- We added a higher neckline option. The Boundless has the same bodice piece for front and back. You have the option to now mix-match between the lower and higher necklines on both pieces and make your favorite combo for your dress!
- We adjusted the shoulders a bit. The old Boundless was sometimes slipping off of the shoulders of our seamstresses. So Judy tweaked it a bit to bring it in and avoid the slipping issue.
- We added the layers feature to the pdf download. You can print only the size you need and save some ink!
I, of course, used the lower neckline for my maxi dress version. I can’t help it, you guys. I love a lower neckline on me. (No Mom, it’s not because I’m trying to show off my boobs, either.)
I used the lower cut for the back bodice as well. Essentially, I can wear my dress frontwards and backwards and would never know the difference. No need for a “this is the back” tag on this dress because it doesn’t matter! Ha!
I decided to go all crazy and didn’t line my bodice, but rather I turned the edge down and stitched it. I just wanted to see if I liked it that way or not. The brushed DTY that I used worked well and because I have a coverstitch, the turned look turned out pretty darn great. I don’t think I’d always do it. And if I had a heavier fabric, I’d probably want a lined bodice to help with the weight of the skirt. But this worked just fine.
I’m super happy with the update to the shoulder slope. The first Boundless did like to slide off my shoulders a bit. And now I feel very secure that my bra straps aren’t always going to be at the risk of showing. But my tattoo still peeks out a little bit and I love that. I feel like I have that piece on my shoulder and it doesn’t always get seen. (PS I am literally dying to get new ink. But that is totally unrelated to this blog post, haha. Carrying on!)
I think Judy gets an A+ with this Boundless update! It actually convinced me to make my second ever maxi dress!

It looks very good but I’ve just bought the pattern and there’s no skirt piece to print or any instructions on how to make it.
The Boundless pattern’s skirt is a large rectangular piece. So it’s given as dimensions in the cut chart, rather than having you print a big rectangle and use a bunch of ink and paper. 🙂
