The Essential Tank by Patterns for Pirates

Jun 9, 2016

Guess what?  It’s release day over at Patterns for Pirates!  Woot woot!

We are officially launching the Essential Tank, which is probably the most accurately named pattern of Judy’s to-date.  Because it’s going to be one of your essential sews this summer.  It’s quick, semi-fitted, has a million ways to sew it, and looks fabulous on everyone.

Even on a tanktop pattern, the options were not skimped on.  There are FIVE lengths (dress, tunic, curved, tshirt and maxi), TWO strap types (straight and racerback), and TWO different ways to finish the arms and neck.  Not too shabby.

I made two versions.  Well, two final versions.  We ran this sucker through the rounds…so even though I made a ton more tanks, I only photographed the ones that were the final version.  The first was a curved hem, racerback tank.

Curved hems are my favorite, favorite style.  I find myself constantly choosing it for my shirt hem and it’s no different with the Essential Tank.  I still love it.

However, f I may be perfectly honest, I am not the world’s biggest fan of racerback styles.  At least not on me.  They always look so cute on everyone else.  I’ve attempted it many times, but I just can’t fully get behind it.  Mostly it’s the fault of my bras, since I have yet to find “the” racerback bra that fits me awesomely.  I’ll keep looking.

My second share on here is of the dress length.  Does anyone else remember my Free Spirit Tank sewing obsession of 2015?  Well….move over FST, there is a new love in my life.

In dress form, the Essential Tank gives me curves for days.  Well, it doesn’t give me them…I come by that naturally.  What it does do is highlight said curves.  And only the ones I want highlighted.

Bennett isn’t mad when I’ve been wearing these dresses around.  Not one bit.

The pattern does give excellent instructions for creating a finished binding on the arms and neck.  I’m sad that the ones I actually bound beautifully didn’t get photographed because the binding method is SO pretty.  I was totally lazy when choosing to make these and went with the tshirt band method.

Still a legit way to make it happen.  Just not quite as finished and polished looking.

I used to be really good at giving Judy some weirdo photos of myself during testing rounds.  Since I hadn’t done that in a while, I made sure to pick up some slack this test.  You’re welcome.

And now the dirty details!!
