Austin Jeans by Momma Quail Patterns

Aug 16, 2016

I can now officially clothe Bennett from head-to-toe.  But part of me wishes I couldn’t….because now he knows.  Now he knows, people!

Amy from Momma Quail just released the Austin Jeans (via UpCraft Club) and they are so awesome.  Before we start, just know that I almost bombed it on this test.  I over extended myself.  I didn’t have enough yardage of fabric and made shorts instead of the original intention of pants.  And I waited until last minute.  Sorry Amy.  You don’t deserve me!

But hey!  Bennett has new shorts!  So let’s talk about it.

I have legitimately tried to make a working zipper fly a MILLION times now.  And sucked at it all of those million times.  The Austin Jeans instructions?  NAILED IT.  Dude.  The pattern could be terrible and I would still find it worth based upon the zipper alone.

But the pattern isn’t terrible.  It’s great.  And it went through a ton of changes before it was finalized.  Which to me, makes an excellent pattern designer.

In fact, since these photos, the Austin Pants were redrafted with a higher rise.

The Austin Jeans are certainly a more classic fit.  I don’t like the term “dad jeans”.  But let’s use that if we must.  They have been drafted with a loose fit around the hips and waist, and are meant to be worn with a belt.  No skinny jeans in our family!  Well, not with the men at least.  I love me a skinny jean.

Let me talk about my husband for a second.  This man.  He loves and supports me.  And is the most willing male model in pretty much the entire pdf sewing world.  However, he is still Bennett.  And he likes to make fun of me.

So feast your eyes on this ridiculous man I’ve married.  Seven years, ladies.  You can look, but don’t you touch.

Oh.  And before I go.  I wanted to add that Amy doesn’t leave anything out in this pattern, as far as tips are concerned.  Not only is there the world’s best zipper installation instructions (seriously they’re so good I’m saying it again), but there are also now tips to hem into shorts length / special tips for topstitching thread / distressing denim / adding ready-to-wear instructions.

Are you sold yet?  You should be.  Here’s some info for you!
