What a Day for a Daydream / the Dahle Daydream Dress by Patterns for Pirates

Jul 9, 2024

Oh my goodness, I’m so excited that I could burst!! Y’all, I’ve designed + released another pattern (my 14th paid pattern!) under the Patterns for Pirates umbrella and it is a DREAM.

The Dahle Daydream Dress went through a ridiculous amount of edits before I was able to put it into testing, but I’m glad I stuck it out and made this pattern work. Because I love it so much.

Obs we should talk about the pattern name first.

I’ve named all of the patterns that I’ve released under the Patterns for Pirates brand after something West Virginia related. Sugar Maple Skirt = Our State Tree. Friendly City Sweater = Wheeling’s Nickname. Francis Flounce = The “Father of West Virginia”. Etc, etc, etc.

The Dahle Daydream Dress is named after one of the most beautiful places in our great state! Dahle (pronounced like Dolly) is the last name of the German homesteaders of which the GORGEOUS Dolly Sods Wilderness Area were named after.

The Dahle Daydream Dress is a versatile and romantic garment that combines classic and contemporary elements. It features a charming milkmaid style bodice with an elastic channel that gathers around the bust, creating a soft, romantic look. The empire waistline sits just below the bust, giving the dress a flattering and elongated silhouette.

The pattern offers two shirt lengths—crop and top—providing versatility in styling. The skirt is a half-circle skirt and it comes in two lengths: a playful and flirty mini length, and a more conservative knee length, which can include an optional ruffle for added elegance. There are three sleeve options to choose from, all of which have an elastic gathered sleeve cap. The flutter sleeve gives a soft and whimsical appearance, the short sleeves are elastic hemmed for a sweet ruffled finish, and the long sleeves are a more dramatic bishop sleeve, gathered into a longer cuff.

The Dahle Daydream Dress can be adapted for various occasions, from casual daywear to more dressy events. The romantic bodice and versatile sleeve and length options make it suitable for different seasons and styles. This dress combines vintage-inspired elements with modern versatility, making it a charming addition to any wardrobe.

Pattern options for the Dahle Daydream Dress includes:

  • Elastic Gathered Sleeves: Flutter / Short, elastic hemmed / Long, bishop style with cuffs
  • Hem lengths: Crop / Top / Mini / Knee / Knee with Ruffle
  • Milkmaid Style Bodice
  • Empire Waistline

The Dahle Daydream Dress pattern is drafted for light-to-medium weight knit fabrics with at least 40% horizontal stretch and some vertical stretch. Fabrics with less vertical stretch can be used, but may end up shorter in length.

Specific Fabric Suggestions: Ribbed Knits, Cotton Spandex, Bamboo Lycra, Rayon Spandex Blends, Double Brushed Polyester, Modal Knit Blends, etc.

Additional Notions Needed: Sleeves + Bodice are gathered with 3/8″ elastic. Optional but highly recommended, clear elastic for stabilizing seams in waistline and back bodice.

Hysterically so, I exclusively used fabrics from our past Fabric for Pirates shipments to make all of my Dahles. It wasn’t on purpose at first, I was simply trying to sew through my stash instead of filling up my already overstuffed shelves with new fabrics. But once I realized the trend I’d created for myself, I just kept going. So all five of these puppies are made with prior F4P shipments. How fun is that?

First up is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. Mini dresses will always hold my heart, y’all.

Flutter Sleeves / Mini Length / Mini Jacquard Knit (May 2024 F4P)

Because of the fullness of the skirt, I was only able do as long as a knee length, without having to turn the fabric against the grain. So, I opted to make the knee length skirts longer than I typically do. That way I had a good balance of short + conservative skirts.

I really love this striped modal version. I was worried that the stripes would be a little funky with this bodice, but it ended up being super fun and playful.

Long Sleeve / Knee Length / Modal Knit (March 2024 F4P)

Okay, so here’s another long sleeve, but as a crop top. Seriously love this style so much. The contrast of the giant sleeves against the fitted bodice is ::chefs kiss:: This will make for THE CUTEST fall outfit once the weather calms down and stops trying to kill me this summer.

Long Sleeve / Crop / Honeycomb Jacquard Knit (August 2021 F4P)

Okay, so I’ve probably talked about this a million times, but I HATE gathering fabric. Like, loooooooathe it. It’s my least favorite part of sewing. And yet here I am, designing a pattern that calls for a super long ruffle at the bottom of a circle skirt. And I did it willingly, multiple times. Ha. Joke is on me. I think the ruffle version is ADORBS.

Short Sleeve / Knee Length w/Ruffle / Pointelle Knit (June 2021 F4P)

This final one is my least favorite, but I can’t put a finger on why exactly. I think maybe it’s just not as fun as the long sleeved version paired with the fitted bodice. Those big bishop sleeves spoke to me in ways I’ll never be able to explain, haha.

Short Sleeve / Top / Yummy Ribbed Knit (April 2022 F4P)

Whewwwwwww. Thanks for getting through all of those with me! Isn’t the Dahle Daydream Dress so fun and versatile?

Did you have a favorite of the ones I made?
