The brains and beauties behind Crafting Con and Phat Quarters put out a call for a creative blogging tour that I could not say no to. We were told to pick a legendary creature (think unicorn, dragon, mermaid, sasquatch, etc) and make something inspired by said creature.
As soon as I talked to Louis about it, I knew what I wanted to make: a DRAGON.
Of course, fabric shopping with Louis is always interesting. I assumed I’d be making a green dragon with red on it somewhere. Yet Louis insisted upon using his favorite of all favorite colors: dark blue. So here we are. One adorable, super rad, blue, dragon.
I tried to Google and Pinterest for ideas for our dragon jacket but there, strangely, wasn’t that much out there. At least not in the way of wearable items that weren’t costumes. So I took it into my own hands to create something that was fun, and functional at the same time.
The details in this jacket are some of my favorite, to date.
We first gave him wings. Because every proper dragon needs to be able to fly.
The wings are attached from wrist to armpit and down his side, and simply fold under him when he’s not needing to soar over and burn down villages. Wings are very important to a dragon.
I also gave our dragon scales. They begin mid-head and trailed all the way down the middle of his spine.
Next, I made sure our dragon had a bright, bold belly worthy of being shown. I pin tucked the outsides of the yellow panels, but left the folds loose so they would move and ripple as he wears the jacket. I really love the look it provides for this part.
Last, but certainly not least, I made sure our dragon had eyes. I double layered the buttons, giving him a pair of green eye to stare back at you with.
The entire jacket was made using the Patterns for Pirates Lumberjack shirt as a base. Obviously I made some pretty hefty adjustments to be able to get the look, but my trusty Lumberjack pattern sure came in handy.
I know it seems strange to make a jacket just as we are heading out of the winter season, but we still have some cold days (and mornings!) ahead of us for quite a bit. Louis has worn this jacket every day since I made it and I cannot even begin to tell you how many compliments he has received.
It’s always fun when he spreads his wings so the people (complete strangers) who stopped us can see his impressive wingspan. Oftentimes Louis stays in character while showing off his new duds. Because dragons.
This was an incredibly fun AND challenging tour to be a part of! And better yet? There are prizes to be had!
