Hank & Clementine Fabric Blog Tour

Jan 16, 2018

I am so excited to be on another fun blog tour with my girl Gemia from Phat Quarters!  She brings the fun with brand new fabrics that are about to hit the retail shelves, and challenges my sewing creativity by sending out some non-knit type fabrics my way.  Remember when I made this bear backpack and buttondown combo for Louis?

This time around, I was a lucky duck and got to play with these super adorable Hank and Clementine prints from Swirly Girl and Michael Miller Fabrics!  They SCREAM spring and are seriously so pretty.  I squeaked when they arrived at my doorstep!

I have been a crocheting fool as of late.  It always hits this time of year, and has arrived especially hard because of the amount of snow and cold we’ve been getting.  What can I say?  The colder I get, the more I crochet!

Since I picked up my hooks for the first time, around 7 years ago, I’ve had the same case for them.  I’m almost ashamed to share this image with you.  It’s all of my hooks, and then needles, thread, scissors, tags, buttons and whatever random thing I can shove into my case.  Pretty right?  (A pretty big eye sore, maybe.)

It dawned on me that maybe it was time to upgrade my crochet gear to something way, way cuter!

I headed straight over to my favorite bag designer: Sew Sweetness.  Sara’s patterns and bag designs are totally my style and I’ve used a ton of her patterns now for my own purses.  Actually, the one I carry currently is the Bye Bye Love bag in the smaller size.  The larger version was the second purse I’d ever made for myself!

What I found over at SS was the jackpot of all crochet cases.  It’s actually designated as “Creative Maker Supply Case” and it’s ah-dorable.  I slapped a Thread & Grain vinyl design on it and sewed this baby up!

I seriously get the biggest grin on my face when I see this squirrel fabric.  But who wouldn’t?  Aren’t they the cutest things, with their happy little acorns?  I DIE.

I was so happy that my decision to create this case allowed for the fabrics to still be showcased.  Sometimes the print sizes don’t work with smaller objects.  But this certainly does!  The colors are SO springy and happy and are totally a color scheme I’d pick for myself.  I’m calling this a fabric and sewing win, for sure!

Check out this organization, friends!  It’s a far cry from the sham that’s happening in my old case.  I went a little off the pattern and only have two zippers, thus two openings.  But four storage doors on one case are way  more than enough for my crochet habits!

One of my major problems was that I kept misplacing my needles.  I didn’t have anything good to stick them into and keep secure.  I actually find myself to be mildly genius, since I cut and sewed a rectangle of fusible fleece to one of the sides, and it’s just loose enough to stick my yarn needs through and keep them in place.  (And I clearly didn’t need all off those openings for crochet hooks, but I figured I could add some pens or pencils if I wanted as well.  It never hurts to have extra openings, does it?)

The second zipper opens to reveal three pockets.  Two of them are zippered with orange and yellow zippers to coordinate these fun, bright prints.  And the opposite side hosts an open pocket for me to throw my thread into.  I really intended on getting a better vinyl or even a mesh for that open pocket, but I didn’t remember until I’d been standing in the JoAnns checkout line for like ten minutes and I didn’t want to give up my spot.

So I quick decided at home to use some thicker plastic that I had laying around.  I loved it all the way up until I turned the piece right-side-out and crinkled the crap out of it.  Oh well, you win some and you lose some.  And the pocket is still functional….we can chalk it up to a win.

Now, now only did my case need an upgrade, but so did my yarn bag.  Yes, you guys…I have a yarn bag.  And it’s stuffed to the brim with yarn and nearly exploding all over the floor.  Time to make a big ass yarn bag, am I right?  I simply cut 21″x21″ squares, box cut 4″ into the bottom corners, added straps and made my new bag.

Sometimes simple sews are the most rewarding, am I right?  This puppy is currently stuffed with over 12 skeins of yarn and it still has a lot of room to hold my fiber goodies.

I am totally ready to be a crocheter on the go now.  (Or really just a traveling around my house from couch to couch crocheter.)  It’s so much better when I have a bag and a case made out of the sweetest, happiest prints!

So cute! I kind of want to crochet now, ONLY so I can have a pouch to organize hooks 🙂

So….are both zippers attached at the middle? I can’t quite tell for sure how you did that.
