Tree Hunting.

Dec 2, 2014

On Sunday, the McKinleys went full-blown Christmas spirit by getting our Christmas tree.  This is the first year that we actually chopped down our own tree…and I’m thinking we will do it from here on out.  Super fun!  Thank goodness the amazing Gilot family invited us to tag along with them.

We walked up, they handed us sleds and saws and we were on our way.  Louis enjoyed being transported in the tree sled.  And he even got his own saw (plastic, of course) to help Daddy chop our perfect tree down with.  So cute!

We love when we get moments with the Gilot family.  Bennett and I snapped some family photos of them and of course snapped photos of Louis and Lilliana being insanely adorable together.  Seriously.  I feel like we are setting our children up at ridiculously young ages.  So not like me.  I hate the idea of Louis dating (yes, he’s four and I already hate every girl that wants to date him) but I’m totally cool with this sweet little girl.  I think it’s her perfect combination of sweet and sassiness.  Good god she’s cute.

It was incredibly warm for the very last day of November and couldn’t have been more perfect for tree hunting.  Well.  Maybe the wind could have given us a little bit of a break.  But it was still amazing.  I had issues containing my desire for the biggest tree ever grown.  I don’t know why I kept thinking we needed 12 foot trees in our living room.  I mean…we have high ceilings.  But we don’t exactly have the largest car for transporting them.  I couldn’t help but be drawn toward them.  When Bennett and I settled on the one we wanted, it ended up being huge anyway.  Whoops.

Let’s just say that cutting the tree down took a bit longer than Bennett had anticipated.  He was heckled by Jon-Erik and one of the guys working there a good bit.  In fairness, I picked a giant tree.  And it has a pretty thick base to it.  But poor Bennett had to work to get that thing cut down.  I think Louis really enjoyed this “ultimate guy time” with his Daddy.  Even if his saw wasn’t doing any work.

Pretty freaking adorable.

We were so quick to get our tree this year and now we are super slow to get any Christmas decorating done.  There is a giant, bare tree in our living room right now and I’m not sure we have specific plans to get any lights or ornaments on it yet.  But hey.  We’ve got the tree.  And it smells really good.

Hey Christmas, bring it on.  I’m ready.

I remember as a little girl going with my family to pick our and cut down a Christmas tree. Then one year in high school my mom bought a fake tree and it's never seemed the same. Currently our tree consists of a two foot tall fake tree that my mother in law gave us a few years ago. Because we travel for the holiday it's not reasonable enough to buy a real one. I am hoping some day when we have a family we will, like your family, go to a tree farm and pick that special tree. Tis the Season!

We used to travel every year back to Michigan for Christmas to see my family. The first year Louis was born, I was so overwhelmed by everything that we didn't even put up our own tree…we just lurched off of others' holiday spirits. Now we've decided to give Louis his Christmas mornings at home and the holiday spirit is back in full force. I think we lose some of the magic for a little while…everyone does. But it will come back eventually. 🙂
