Playing Catch.

Sep 15, 2015

Sometimes I feel like we’ve failed a little bit as parents.  We haven’t raised a kid who begs to be outside.  Granted, he likes being outside and playing…but I wish he lived for the great outdoors.  *sigh.

We’ve been trying a little harder lately, to be outside more often and get some more fresh air in our lungs.  It’s great timing too, because it’s finally cool enough to not be sweating while we are running around.

Lou has been enjoying the outdoor time.  And he loves to dictate what we play.  Most of the time, we are playing “Tag”.  But he likes to call it something else and make different rules.  For instance, last night we played “Superhero chases villain” and if we got caught, we had to sit on the steps.  BUT the sneaky villains also had a key to get out of jail, so we could break ourselves loose and run again.

Insert the same scenario but substitute “Shark chases fish” and “Mosasaurus catches Velociraptor”.  And instead of jail, we had to break free of the bellies by kicking out their teeth or punching the wall (their stomach) and making them throw us back out.  Haha.  Seriously.  This kid and his imagination.

Sometimes he lets us play catch.  But of course he gives us some sort of rule that he’s established.  Always the little bossypants, this kiddo.

I’m hoping we can keep our trend going.  I feel like we can rock parenting in so many different ways…and then suck in so many others.  Isn’t this how it goes for everyone?  I hope we get to the point where Louis is mad that it’s raining because he’s stuck inside.  We have too many indoor distractions (and I am tired by the day’s end) so it’s hard to sometimes want to do anything besides be a bum.

We could all use a little time away from screens and modern distractions.  It’s good to just have plain ole’ playtime in our own backyard.  For all of us.
