Today is my 31st birthday! Whoop whoop!
I know some women hate turning another year older. And admitting their real age. But honestly, I have no issues with it. I am who I am. We can’t stop Father Time, so we might as well party on with him!
Though, I’ll admit that my version of “partying” has changed in the last decade. Let’s just say that I stayed up late last night to make my pants. And then sweat it out a bit today in our non-air conditioned house to make my top. So…yeah. Partying in my sewing studio!
I’ve been dreaming about making these shorts for a couple of weeks now. I have had the fabric for forever, I just haven’t had the time to make them. So glad I did. I’ve been seeing all over Pinterest and such, where people have added fabric contrast to their denim shorts. I’m all “I can do that!” So I made myself another pair of denim SOS Pants (Patterns for Pirates, of course) and added the Star Wars fabric panel.
How’d I do it? Well…my stretch denim should be called “stretch” denim. It’s barely stretchy. So after doing some math (so much math) I figured out that I needed to go THREE full sizes up from what I normally wear in this pattern, to be able to use this denim. The Star Wars quilting cotton fabric was added on top of the denim panel there. I thought it would be best to do it this way, for stability sake.
I’m also SO HAPPY that I asked about topstitching thread for denim fabrics. I love the look of it, but my sewing machine absolutely hates traditional topstitching thread. No matter how much sweet talk I give her. So I triple stitched the lines in a similar color of standard thread and BAM! I have a happy machine and so much less cursing came out of me.
Before I go, I’ll leave you with these gems. My cousin reminded me today of the lesson I was teaching over Thanksgiving break this past year:
“If it bends, bend it.”
It’s possible that we aren’t supposed to take things SO literal. But whatevs. It’s my birthday, I can do what I want to.
OH. You want outfit details? I’m on it!
