We’re baaaaaaack! Today is the kickoff of Boys Can Wear Pink: Season 3. It’s one of my favorite tours ever. Not only for my love of breaking down gender stereotypes one blog post at a time, but also because BCWP was my first ever blog tour to be in, two years ago. Fun, right? (Also I love Kelly from Handmade Boy and will practically do anything that woman asks of me.)
I had a really long, emotional note that I wrote and saved on my phone a few weeks back that some day I will share publicly. It’s about raising a boy in today’s world. A boy who is sensitive and smart and sweet and kind. And how I am practically bracing myself every single day to take on bullying and bullies in his future…because I fear it’s coming. I’m not ready to pour my heart out just yet.
Just know that this tour means a lot to me. More than a color. It stands for everything I believe in as a mother who refuses to “toughen up” her son, or force him into liking only certain things because the general public has assigned a gender to them.
To be honest, Lou’s favorite color isn’t pink. He’ll tell you that his favorite colors are: blue, red, green, gold, orange, brown, and purple. And that because pink isn’t his favorite doesn’t mean he does like it. It’s just not his favorite.
Totally cool with me kiddo. Pink isn’t my jam either. But I’ll still wear it from time to time, when the right outfit or fabric comes along. I thought I could try and make him that special outfit, that he’d love…despite it not being on his “favorites list”. I think we did it!
I thought it’d be fun to make him a Valentine’s Day outfit…in hopes that his school lets them have a special non-uniform day. Or that he can rock it when he gets home later. We are suckers for dressing in theme. (We = me. But nobody is really counting, right?)
Louis has been hooked on The Beatles music lately. Kiddo has always had great taste in music. The Beat Bugs is a Netflix original show that features only Beatles music and is so great. He’s been loving it. Especially “All You Need is Love”, which is the leadout in all of the episodes. We talked and he was totally on board with me making a shirt with that saying on it. Super excited, really! I gave him a few options for the design and we settled on this one. I think it’s super cute!
I put together a head-to-toe look for him, all with Patterns for Pirates patterns. The flannel is a super soft plaid from JoAnn Fabrics, from which I made a Lumberjack Shirt. Louis is so long in the torso and tends to grow up instead of out so much that I actually extended the length of this top a liiiiiittle bit longer than normal. This way we have a little more wear out of the shirt, since most of his time lately is spent in school polos. The inner lining of the cuffs are a solid pink, so it gives a little extra pop of color when his sleeves are rolled.
Louis has been RUNNING THROUGH all of his school pants. Seriously. About half of them have holes in the knees already. I was desperate to make him some new ones, so we could stretch out what we were currently working with. So I whipped out my trusty Cpt. Comfort Jeans pattern and made him a pair of comfy khakis. I wanted to add a fun detail in these, but since his uniform is pretty basic and doesn’t allow for much outside of slacks…I decided to add some Star Wars fabric (with a touch of pink in R2-D2 and C-3PO’s detailing!) in the pockets. It’s like a secret only he knows about. I love it!
The shirt we chose is the Deep Sea Vneck, in a very basic grey interlock. I like to use more stable knits with Louis and Bennett’s clothes because they seem to prefer those fabrics over anything with any sort of drape. And how can you not love a basic grey tee in your closet?
Though…I happened to make it a little less basic when I added the pink vneck element to it. I thought it would really draw the entire outfit together. And it did! Louis has already begged me to let him wear this shirt a few times, since he’s the Beatle’s #1 fan and wants to show it with his new tee!
I think we managed to pull together a very cool, casual, PINK, boy’s outfit. What do you think?
