I could not decide if I wanted to share these photos before Halloween or not. I was worried that maybe it’d spoil the fun of showing off Lou’s costume before he gets to wear it out. But then I realized that I am WAY TOO EXCITED about how it turned out. So here’s me, sharing early.
Da-da-da-daaaaaaa: we have a little Quicksilver in our midst!
The McKinleys have decided to be XMen this year for Halloween and Louis really wanted to be Quicksilver. But the movie version — since he knows him most recently from Days of Future Past and Age of Apocalypse. I think Lou makes the cutest little Quicksilver, though he doesn’t quite have the snarky/cocky attitude down. Kiddo is still dripping in sugar. And that’s okay with me.
For sure, the jacket is my favorite piece. I used the Lumberjack Shirt/Jacket pattern and made some adjustments. There is a full working zipper down the front, as well as the added zipper details on either side of the front bodice pieces. And then I gave him a faux pocket on one side, to try and emulate what Quicksilver wears in the cinematic universe.
Louis and I legit had an argument in JoAnns the other day, over the fabric we were going to use for his jacket. I had a more solid piece picked out, but it was a lot more shiny silver. Louis HATED it and was almost in tears that I was going to force him to wear a shiny jacket, when Quicksilver’s jacket wasn’t that shiny. So of course, he picked out THE MOST EXPENSIVE FABRIC that JoAnns carries, in their cosplay section. Good thing I could squeeze this out of a yard…and had a 60% off coupon. Or this wasn’t going to end well between us.
In the end, I do love how it looks. Kind of rocker and a little badass. I hope he wants to wear this after Halloween because I think it’s just so cute.
Bennett had an old Pink Floyd tee that was made of this burnout material and really was more see-thru than he wants in a shirt for himself. So I cut it down to a Louis size. Easy-peasy, besides the fact that burnout is so thin and annoying to work with.
For his footwear, we found a pair of sneakers for $5 at Walmart and used fabric spraypaint to turn them silver. I still need to clean up my paint job a little bit, since the paint escaped beyond where I had it taped off. But the silver turned out really bright and shiny on the black shoe base that we used…which makes me kind of want to play with paint and shoes more now. (But that’s just because i have issues and want to DIY all the things.)
The final thing that I put together for his outfit was to make him some simple black skinnies. Which are really Baby Bear Joggers in a refined ponte fabric. They are thick and stretchy and super comfy and I see Louis being able to get a lot of use out of them outside of Halloween. Yay for a costume this year that we can break down and wear separately in everyday situations!

And I thought I was the only one who fought with my kid over fabric in JoAnn’s
Super cute! Love the jacket!
Haha. No way. You can always count on Louis and I having creative differences and hashing it out in the fabric aisles.
