Phoenix :: Halloween 2017

Oct 25, 2017

Since I already shared Louis’ Halloween costume (HERE), I figured it would be worth it to break down my own costume…and hopefully Bennett’s, whenever I get around to starting and finishing it.  #whoops

Since we are all going as XMen, I had to pick a fellow redhead.  HAD TO.  Plus Bennett is going as Cyclops and he and Jean Grey are kiiiinda together.  So, it just made sense.  The problem with creating Marvel character costumes is that there are so stinking many variations of their suits between the comics and the movies.  But I decided that Dark Phoenix was the way to go.  So here we are.

After taking and editing these (and avoiding the crazy rainstorm that was coming), I realized that I totally had my hands wrong for Phoenix.  Damnit, Katy.  Try harder next time!

My costume was actually pretty easy to put together, despite all of the little extra details that it needed.  I had considered making a bodysuit, but wanted the option to just use the shirt if we ever head to a ComicCon and I want to wear it.  Separates was the better decision to make, but it still needed to have that whole bodysuit look.  Because apparently I need to wear the tightest clothes ever, when I clearly don’t have the same abdominal muscles that are drawn onto….well, any character.

On my top, I basically appliquéd the sleeves and top bodice piece.  I didn’t want gloves because they’re super annoying to wear, but wanted to kind of emulate that look by extending the length of the sleeves and adding a thumbhole.  That way it’s like having gloves but not really at all.  For the pants, I actually colorblocked the top and bottom legs together.  It wasn’t my cleanest application, but it totally worked out.  I’m not 100% sure why I took two different methods for basically the same result on my sleeves vs legs, but it worked for both so I’m not really going to question myself.

I thought it would be fun to wear a bright red wig, instead of just my regular hair.  First, I’ve never been a red-red like this before.  And my hair is nowhere near as long.  It’s fun to put wigs on sometimes, isn’t it?  I’m going to need to figure out how to make it work for me more, rather than me work for it.  Because it was being a royal turd during the time I snapped these pictures.  Momma is NOT putting up with this on Halloween, haha.  I’m putting my foot down, cosplay wig.

All in all, I’m pretty happy with the outcome.  I don’t think I’d hold my own next to the intense cosplay-ers that are out there.  But this is a win in my book for Halloween.  And that’s all that matters.  Now onto sewing up Bennett’s!

    You did a great job, Katy! I have a hard time with wigs, too, since my hair is long and thick. It’s hard to get it all under there! There is one cosplayer I know that actually has her head shaved! I guess it would be easier to wear wigs that way.

      Thanks Stacy! And omg. That’s some dedication to her cosplay! Bennett and I have toyed with the idea of joining a local Star Wars chapter. But they’re intense about the regulations on costumes, so I’ll need to actually sit down and plan it all out one day.
