Luck of the Irish | Free Crochet Hat Pattern

Feb 18, 2014

One of my blogging goals for 2014 was to write up a crochet pattern each month – so far, so good.  Last month, I gave you all a Valentine’s Day inspired hat and this time around I’m going Irish.  You’ve got more than enough time before St. Patrick’s Day arrives to whip one of these cuties up.

My favorite type of yarn to work with is Caron’s Simply Soft.  I’m sure many people would beg to differ but it’s just my standard go-to.  There are always a ton of colors to choose from and it’s super soft (hence the name) but also hypo-allergenic for anyone who might have an allergy to wool.  Plus, I found this new, or at least new-to-me, “kelly green” color while shopping the other day and HAD to make something for the upcoming holiday.

I’m not listing the color combos I used for my different hats.  That is up to you!  One pointer I could give is that I always plan out my combos before I start stitching and try and land with a specific color on the bottom.  Because white is great for a neutral color, I like to use it in my striped hats a lot but I do everything in my power not to end on white.  The band/bottom of the cap gets the most “love” from everyone when pulling it down onto your head, adjusting it out of your eyes, etc.  White seems like an awful choice to have the most traffic on because it’ll get noticeably dirty the quickest.  (And for these hats, I wanted to end on grey so the shamrocks would stand out the best.)

***As always, you’re more than welcome to sell finished products from this pattern.  I only ask that you give me credit and link back to this pattern.  Please play nice and don’t claim the pattern or photos as your own.  If you do end up making a hat from my pattern, I’d love to see the results!  Link me to your blog, email me a photo (katy@handmadeescapade) or post it to my Facebook page.  I want to see what you can do!!

I thought I’d try and throw this hat onto my mannequin.  He’s got to be good for something more than scaring people as he’s standing in my craft room.  Also, please note that I STILL haven’t changed my Halloween chalkboard design.  :embarrassing:

As usual, if you have any questions or run into a hiccup along the way, please don’t hesitate to ask.  I’m pretty good at responding to them, and almost as good at actually helping figure out the problem.

Happy Crocheting!!
